Background & context

Das Kettenhemd ist eine keltische Erfindung des 3. Jahrhunderts v. Chr., und Rom übernahm es ebenso wie den Montefortino-Helm von den Galliern. Leisten konnten es sich nur Adlige, die mit ihren Gefolgsleuten den Kern jedes Stammesaufgebots bildeten. Bei Telamon 225 v. Chr. gingen sie gegen Rom unter, bei Cannae kämpften sie als Söldner Hannibals in dessen Mitte. Erst Caesars Feldzüge 58 bis 51 v. Chr. und die Kapitulation des Vercingetorix bei Alesia brachen die Macht der gallischen Kriegerkaste.

On the tabletop

These 30 warriors in mail are the nobility of a Gallic tribe and, with their followers, form the core of your army. Behind six banners and totems they lead the charge with sword, spear or javelin, while the unarmoured tribesmen make up the mass. Striped and checked woollen clothing and the torcs are worth highlighting when you paint them. Use them against Caesar, at Telamon or as Hannibal's mercenaries at Cannae.
