Description

The Guard Grenadiers on Horseback were among Napoleon's most elite cavalry units-undefeated in battle against enemy cavalry and renowned for their imposing appearance on black warhorses. During their retreat at the Battle of Waterloo, they left the field with a bearing that inspired admiration even from their adversaries.

Background & context

Die Grenadiere zu Pferd bildeten die schwerste Waffe der Gardekavallerie und wurden entsprechend sparsam eingesetzt, Napoleon hielt sie zurück, bis eine Entscheidung anstand. Aufnahme fand nur, wer über zehn Jahre gedient hatte, mindestens vier Feldzüge hinter sich und eine Tapferkeitsauszeichnung vorweisen konnte, die Bärenfellmützen auf schweren Rappen taten den Rest. Am Abend des 18. Juni 1815 löste sich die französische Armee in Panik auf, das Regiment verließ das Feld in geschlossener Ordnung.

On the tabletop

The Horse Grenadiers were the heaviest cavalry of the Imperial Guard, and Napoleon held them back until the decisive moment. That is how you use the four Warlord Resin bases in 13.5 mm Waterloo games: as a reserve that only charges when a breakthrough is possible or a gap must be closed. Together with the Polish Guard lancers they were never beaten by enemy cavalry in combat. Base sprue and regimental flags are included.
