Product details

Background & context

The infantry regiment formed the organizational foundation for both warring parties in the American Civil War. Originally designed for ten companies of 100 men each, the actual strength significantly dwindled due to casualties, disease, and desertions. The Union states tended to consolidate decimated units into new formations, sometimes at the expense of esprit de corps. Regiments typically bore a number and the name of their state of origin, thus becoming identity-forming symbols for their home regions.

On the tabletop

With 300 Union soldiers you can field a whole infantry brigade in Epic Battles: three regiments of 100 men each, led by three mounted commanders. The regiments form your battle line in the centre, while the three guns support them with fire at range. As Union regiments carried a number and a state in their names, you can paint each regiment as a distinct unit with its own origin. Further boxes make a division for the great battles of the Civil War.
