Background & context

Ab dem 5. Jahrhundert setzten Gruppen von Angeln, Sachsen und Jüten über die Nordsee nach Britannien über - erst als angeworbene Söldner spätrömischer Statthalter, dann als Siedler, die blieben und eigene Herrschaften aufbauten. Ihre Kriegsführung lebte vom Gefolgschaftswesen: Ein Anführer band Männer über Geschenke, Waffen und Gastmahle an sich, und wer Rüstung trug, gehörte zur schmalen Spitze dieser Schicht. Gekämpft wurde mit Sturmangriff und geworfenen Speeren, danach mit Speer, Schwert, Axt oder Seax. Der geschlossene Schildwall der späteren Angelsachsen kam erst Jahrhunderte danach auf.

On the tabletop

These 36 armoured warriors are the retainers at the head of your Early Saxon war band, men who wore mail and helmets. They charge forward, throwing javelins and angons on the run, then close in with spear, sword, axe or seax. Small bucklers show the early way of fighting, the larger round shields the later shield wall. Their opponents are Late Romans and Romano-Britons, and the figures mix well with later Saxons and Vikings.
