Background & context

The early Levy Javelinmen represent the common auxiliaries of the Mesopotamian city-states in the 3rd millennium BC. As lightly armed men from Sumer and Syria, they carried javelins and spears and were simply dressed in kilts or tunics. In regular armies, they served as skirmishers; in nomadic groups, they formed the light core element of the Early and Middle Bronze Age. Their simplicity in equipment and clothing reflects the social strata of early Mesopotamian society.

On the tabletop

A Sumerian city-state called up its levy from the fields in times of war, and these men received little more than a javelin and a kilt or tunic. In Hail Caesar the eight figures therefore fight not in the spear formation but ahead of it or on its flanks. There they throw their javelins and give way when the enemy comes on. You can also field them for nomadic groups of the Early and Middle Bronze Age.
