Background & context

The Levy Archers of the Early Bronze Age (c. 3000-2000 BC) formed the light infantry of the Mesopotamian city-states. As conscripted citizens and farmers, they possessed little protective equipment and wore only knee-length cloth or simple skirts. Nevertheless, their simple bows of wood or reed were effective weapons on the ancient battlefield. They served equally in Sumerian, Akkadian, early Syrian, and Elamite city-state armies and could also operate as skirmishers or irregular troops within nomadic groups.

On the tabletop

Raised from the people of Ur, Uruk, Lagash or Susa, these archers marched out for the length of a campaign with a simple self bow and no armour. The eight figures in plain garments give an army of the Sumerian cities or of Susa extra missile troops in Hail Caesar. They rely on the spearmen in front of them for protection and shoot over them at the enemy before the lines clash.
