Product details

Background & context

Augustus created the Guard as what Caesar had lacked: an armed formation answerable to the ruler personally. Nine cohorts, better paid, with shorter service and stationed in Rome, where no other troops were permitted. Within a century the bodyguard had become a power in its own right. The Guard raised Claudius, murdered Caligula and in the year 193 auctioned off the imperial title to the highest bidder. On the gaming table they can be recognised by the oval shield and their more elaborate equipment.

On the tabletop

Augustus created the Praetorian Guard as a bodyguard answerable only to the emperor. In Hail Caesar you field the 20 plastic Praetorians as an elite unit beside your legionaries and arm them with either pilum or gladius. The mounted metal Marcus Aurelius leads the army as its general. Spare helmets, pila, shields, a cavalry helmet with face mask and full-colour shield transfers give you room to vary assembly and painting.
