Early Imperial Romans: Praetorian Cavalry Command contains three mounted metal figures: Praetorian Officer, Signifer, and Cornificer. The included models are made of metal and are supplied as an unpainted tabletop kit. The Praetorian Guard was founded by Emperor Augustus as his personal bodyguard after his predecessor Julius Caesar was assassinated without such protection.

Background & context

Augustus richtete die Prätorianergarde ein, nachdem der Mord an Caesar gezeigt hatte, was ein ungeschützter Machthaber riskiert. Die berittene Abteilung, die Equites Singulares Augusti, begleitete den Kaiser zu Staatsakten ebenso wie ins Feldlager und wuchs im zweiten Jahrhundert von rund tausend auf etwa zweitausend Reiter. Ihre Ausrüstung war teurer, ihr Sold höher und ihre Dienstzeit kürzer als bei allen anderen Verbänden. Ihr politisches Gewicht war so groß, dass die Garde mehr als einmal über die Thronfolge mitentschied.

On the tabletop

An officer, a signifer with the standard and a cornicen with the signal horn form the command group for the cavalry of the Praetorian Guard. In Hail Caesar you place these three metal figures at the head of a unit of mounted Praetorians, giving it a leader, a standard and a signaller. The Guard cavalry escorted the emperor on campaign, so in your early Imperial Roman army they work well as the mounted escort of your general.
