Background & context

Der Optio war der vom Centurio selbst bestimmte Stellvertreter, der Name kommt vom lateinischen optare, auswählen. Sein Platz war das hintere Ende der Centurie, wo er Nachzügler aufsammelte und verhinderte, dass die Formation im Gefecht auseinanderlief. Als Rangabzeichen trug er einen langen Stab. Für einen Legionär war der Posten ein bezahlter Karrieresprung und oft die Vorstufe zum Centurionat.

On the tabletop

Three optios complete the command groups of your Imperial legions or auxiliaries in Hail Caesar. The optio was the deputy chosen by the centurion and stood at the rear of the century, where he dressed the ranks and drove stragglers back into line. He used his long knobbed staff for that as much as a badge of rank. For a legionary the post was often the step before becoming a centurion. All three figures are metal.
