    Product details

    Background & context

The name comes from the wild ass, which kicks out backwards, and that is exactly how the throwing arm slammed against the buffer. Powered by twisted bundles of sinew, the machine hurled dressed stone balls in a high arc and, when needed, naphtha-soaked incendiaries over the battlements. It was rarely used in the open field because reloading took time. But if it hit a closed formation, the stone tore a gap through ranks and morale alike.

    On the tabletop

The onager takes its name from the wild ass, which kicks out backwards. With a crew of three it belongs to an early Imperial Roman army in Hail Caesar and hurls large stones or burning balls of naphtha over palisades, earth ramparts and walls. It was rarely used in open battle, but when it hits a closed formation of cavalry or infantry the effect is devastating. For siege scenarios you set it up in front of your opponent's fortifications.
