    Hintergrund & Einordnung

    The onager was the heavy artillery of the Roman Imperial era-a torsion-powered catapult that took its name from the wild ass whose powerful kick resembled the machine's recoil. In siege warfare, it hurled large stones or naphtha-soaked fireballs over fortress walls. Even in open battle, a hit could devastatingly decimate an entire cavalry formation or infantry line. Roman legions masterfully employed these machines to breach fortifications and wear down enemy formations.
