    Product details

    Background & context

General Gaius Marius's reform in the late 2nd century BC fundamentally changed the Roman army. To reduce the cumbersome baggage train, legionaries were required to carry their own gear - attached to a characteristic yoke (furca). These soldiers, known as "Marius's mules," were thus significantly more mobile and effective than earlier legions. The image of the heavily laden but unshakeable legionary on the march is one of the most iconic images in Roman military history.

    On the tabletop

Since Marius, legionaries carried their own baggage on a yoke, which earned them the nickname Marius' Mules. The eight marching figures with eight yokes show a contubernium on the move. In Hail Caesar you use them in scenarios where a marching column is surprised or a camp is being built. As escorts for a baggage train or as the target of an ambush, they give a game its story. They also work well for dioramas away from the fighting.
