Background & context

The legionaries of the early Roman Empire - from Augustus until the crisis of the 3rd century - were considered the most powerful infantry in the ancient world. Clad in lorica segmentata, equipped with the large rectangular scutum and the short gladius, they were present on every battlefield from Britannia to Mesopotamia. The kneeling combat stance shows legionaries in a firing position using slings or pilums - a common tactical image in the Roman battle line.

On the tabletop

These eight kneeling legionaries form the front rank of a Roman unit, crouching behind their scutum. You give them gladius and pilum for close combat or slings to shoot from the front rank. Place standing legionaries behind them and the block gains visible depth in Hail Caesar. Under missile fire the front men took cover like this while the ranks behind raised their shields over them.
