Background & context

Supplying marching legions was a logistical masterpiece of the Roman Empire. Baggage carts transported equipment, provisions, and spoils, and were often driven by slaves or subjugated peoples. Celtic slaves were not uncommon in the early imperial army - as prisoners of war, they were pressed into service with the legions. Such baggage carts were as much a part of the image of a legion on the march as the legionaries themselves.

On the tabletop

This Roman cart with spoked wheels, two mules and a Celtic slave as driver brings your legion's baggage train to the table in Hail Caesar. In scenarios it serves as an objective you must get through hostile territory or that your opponent wants to ambush. Carts like this carried tents, mills and the legate's pay chest behind the marching columns, and in the Teutoburg Forest in AD 9 exactly such a baggage train became plunder. All parts are metal.
