    Product details

    Background & context

The Dromedarii were auxiliary camel-riding troops levied by Rome from the eastern desert provinces of its empire. The most famous unit was the Ala I Ulpia Dromedariorum Milliaria, raised by Emperor Trajan and stationed in Syria. Mixed auxiliary cohorts in the East regularly included a few Dromedarii in their ranks - for example, about three dozen in the Cohors XX Palmyrenorum Equitata, which was stationed in Dura Europos in the early 3rd century AD. These unusual warriors patrolled remote desert areas that were largely inaccessible to regular infantry or cavalry.

    On the tabletop

Dromedarii were the camel riders Rome recruited in its eastern desert provinces. Trajan raised a whole ala of them in Syria, and mixed cohorts such as the one at Dura Europos included a few. The three metal riders, picked at random from the available poses, wear robes and carry amphorae and water skins. In Hail Caesar you use them in desert scenarios for patrols and scouting, for skirmishing or for a charge. They complement early Imperial infantry and cavalry on the eastern frontier.
