Background & context

Die Auxilia rekrutierten sich aus Bewohnern der Provinzen ohne römisches Bürgerrecht - Bataver, Thraker, Gallier, Syrer. Nach fünfundzwanzig Jahren Dienst bekamen sie es, und ihre Söhne wurden damit legionsfähig. Ausbildung und Drill unterschieden sich kaum von den Legionen, an manchen Grenzabschnitten stellten die Hilfstruppen sogar die Mehrheit der Soldaten. Ihre Kohorten trugen Kettenhemd, Gladius, Speer und den kennzeichnenden ovalen Schild.

On the tabletop

A centurion, cornicen and signifer with signum lead a cohort of your early Imperial auxilia in Hail Caesar. The auxiliary troops stood in the battle line like legionaries, with mail shirt, gladius, spear and oval shield, and matched them in training and drill. On the table you therefore deploy them alongside the legions in the main line. They were recruited from provincials without citizenship, which they only received after twenty-five years of service.
