    Hintergrund & Einordnung

    The auxiliary troops of the Roman imperial era were not second-class soldiers - they represented an essential part of the empire’s striking power. As mounted units of the alae (wing formations), they operated on the flanks of the battle line and took on tasks that were too difficult or required too much agility for the legions. Recruited from the provinces of the empire - Gaul, Germania, the Orient, or North Africa - these men brought with them their regional horsemanship and combat techniques. Armed with lance and shield, they formed the mobile backbone of every imperial army from Britannia to Mesopotamia.
