Background & context

The auxiliary troops of the Roman imperial era were not second-class soldiers - they represented an essential part of the empire’s striking power. As mounted units of the alae (wing formations), they operated on the flanks of the battle line and took on tasks that were too difficult or required too much agility for the legions. Recruited from the provinces of the empire - Gaul, Germania, the Orient, or North Africa - these men brought with them their regional horsemanship and combat techniques. Armed with lance and shield, they formed the mobile backbone of every imperial army from Britannia to Mesopotamia.

On the tabletop

With lowered lances these three early Imperial auxiliaries ride at the enemy. They wielded the light thrusting lance without stirrups while riding past, so in Hail Caesar they are no battering ram: they secure the wings of the legion, cut off lines of retreat and strike as soon as the enemy formation breaks. With the command pack and further riders from the range you can build a complete unit.
