Product details

Background & context

Under Augustus the citizen army of the Republic became a standing professional army: around 28 legions of a good 5,000 men each, spread along the Rhine, Danube and Euphrates. The sequence in battle was well rehearsed: advance in close order, throw the pila at short range, then go into the broken enemy line with gladius drawn. The Praetorian Guard in Rome stood out visibly from this, with oval shields and transverse helmet crests in place of the equipment of the frontier legions.

On the tabletop

These legionaries advance in a closed line, shields held in front and pila ready to throw. On the table they form the fighting line of your early imperial army, hurling their pila first and then closing in with the gladius. Oval shields and transverse crests let you build the unit as the Praetorian Guard, while the reinforced helmets turn it into a legion of the Dacian Wars. Eight standards in seven designs are provided for the standard bearers.
