    Product details

    Background & context

Every century of an Imperial-era legion carried a light torsion engine with it, which works out at around sixty per legion. They were served not by specialists but by regular legionaries detailed for the job. The weapon threw a heavy bolt considerably further than a bow could reach and was useful in the field as well as behind fort walls. On Trajan's Column it appears, with its characteristic cylindrical drums, in the assault on a Dacian mountain fort.

    On the tabletop

The four torsion engines give your early imperial Roman army long-range firepower: heavy bolts that carry further than any bow. Place them behind the legion, on fort walls or in front of a besieged stronghold. The slider can be built extended or drawn back, and the 16 crew figures crank, load or stand guard. Arms with picks, axes and buckets turn them into legionaries digging in, while the eight stakes protect the gun position.
