    Product details

    Background & context

In the early city-states of Mesopotamia around 2500 BCE, household guards and urban militias formed the backbone of every army. The archers of the Sumerian, Elamite, and early Syrian city-states operated as palace guards or regular militia, supporting the heavily armed spearmen in battle. Their light armament of bows and simple melee weapons made them mobile, but less armored forces in the early Bronze Age combat.

    On the tabletop

Whether as the ruler's household guard or as regular city militia, these eight archers belong to the Early Bronze Age city-states of Sumer, Syria and Elam. In Hail Caesar they shoot from behind or beside the dense spear blocks that defined these armies. The long border wars between Lagash and Umma over the Guedena make good scenarios. Archers rarely appear in the art of the period, but arrowheads from excavations show they were there.
