    Product details

    Background & context

The early highlanders of the Zagros and Taurus Mountains were warlike peoples who settled in the mountains bordering Mesopotamia. As light fighters without shields, they fielded swift javelin throwers who served in the armies of early city-states and empires such as the Akkadians and Elamites. Their mobility and range made them a valuable addition to the heavier infantry of Bronze Age Near Eastern armies.

    On the tabletop

The hill peoples of the Zagros, among them the Lullubi and the Gutians, fought unarmoured and in loose order. In Hail Caesar you place these eight javelinmen on the flanks of an early Mesopotamian army, where they throw and then fall back before a counter-attack. As mercenaries they fit the armies of the lowlands, and as a hill people of their own they oppose Akkad. Naram-Sin's victory stele of around 2250 BC shows the Lullubi as the king's enemies.
