Background & context

The axe-wielding retainers of early Egypt belonged to the pharaoh's personal guard and were known as Shemsu. They served as professional soldiers (Ahauty) and elite shock troops (Menfat) in the armies of the Old and Middle Kingdoms. Unlike the archers, who weakened the enemy from a distance, the axemen were responsible for close combat, storming into enemy ranks with their heavy axes. These figures are also suitable for armies of the First Intermediate Period and the early Second Intermediate Period up to the native Egyptian 16th Dynasty.

On the tabletop

Unlike the levy, the shemsu, the retainers, served a king or a provincial governor permanently. These eight axemen represent that guard for an Old or Middle Kingdom army. In Hail Caesar they stay close to your general and step in where the hand-to-hand fighting has to be decided. Their axe with its semicircular copper blade was the typical weapon of such men, like those the official Weni led against the sand-dwellers of the east around 2300 BC.
