Background & context

Vor dem Neuen Reich kannte Ägypten weder Streitwagen noch Schuppenpanzer. Die Heere des Alten und Mittleren Reichs bestanden aus den Aufgeboten der Gaue, aus Bogenschützen und leicht bewaffneten Nahkämpfern, ergänzt durch nubische Söldner. Wer keinen Schild trug, zog voraus, meldete zurück und warf, was er hatte. Die bemalten Holzmodelle aus dem Grab des Mesehti in Assiut zeigen solche Trupps bis heute in Reih und Glied.

On the tabletop

The early Egyptian javelinmen wear no armour and operate in front of the battle line. In Hail Caesar they scout, harass the enemy with short volleys of javelins, then change position and throw again. The eight figures suit armies of the Old and Middle Kingdoms, which were made up of provincial levies, archers and light close fighters. Painted wooden figures from the tomb of Mesehti at Asyut give you a model for painting them.
