Background & context

The early Mesopotamian city-state armies around 2500 BCE are among the oldest organized military forces in human history. The Sumerian city-states such as Ur, Lagash, and Uruk were in constant conflict with each other and developed closed infantry formations, which are pictorially preserved on the famous Stele of the Vultures. These spear-fighters carried large shields made of wood or wicker, whose weight may have been distributed over a shoulder strap. They formed the backbone of the early Sumerian phalanx and fought in dense ranks against neighboring cities and invaders.

On the tabletop

Kilts of wool, felt or leather, a long thrusting spear and a large shield whose weight was probably carried by a strap over the shoulder: that is how this pack equips eight spearmen of the early Sumerian city-states. In Hail Caesar you close them up into a shield wall that holds the centre and absorbs attacks from the front. This way of fighting grew out of the cities' long feuds over canals and boundary stones.
