Background & context

The Achaeans - also known as the Mycenaeans - were the dominant power in the Aegean region during the Late Bronze Age, from approximately 1600 to 1100 BCE. Their warriors carried the distinctive tower shield and fought with the long thrusting spear as their primary weapon. This early period of Achaean forces includes both Late Minoan and Early Mycenaean armies. The Achaean city-states were in direct contact with the Hittites and the New Kingdom of Egypt, and shaped the legends of ancient Greece right up to Homer.

On the tabletop

A long thrusting spear and a large tower shield mark out the early Achaeans, with whom you raise a Late Minoan or Early Mycenaean army in Hail Caesar. The shield hung from a strap over the shoulder and covered the whole man, so the eight figures advance as a dense spear formation. They belong to the older phase of the Aegean Bronze Age, when the Mycenaean palaces were still adopting Minoan forms.
