Background & context

The two-wheeled platform carts were the faster counterpart to the four-tracked war chariots of early Bronze Age Mesopotamia. Pulled by four equids-donkeys or donkey-onager hybrids-they served the city-state armies of Sumer and Syria in the 3rd millennium BC as command and reconnaissance vehicles. Artifacts such as the Standard of Ur and cylinder seals depict these vehicles, although iconographic sources are sparse and contradictory. Cities like Ur, Lagash, Umma, Eridu, and Mari used such vehicles in their endless rivalries and wars with each other.

On the tabletop

This second platform cart with a high front and low sides adds a fast command or scout vehicle to your Early Bronze Age army in Hail Caesar. With two wheels it was more agile than the heavy four-wheeled battle wagons but had room for only one man, so only one figure rides on the model. Seals and reliefs show such carts inconsistently, which is why the model has no seat.
