Background & context

The early platform wagons of the Mesopotamian city-states were among the oldest military vehicles in history, used in the 3rd millennium BC. As two-wheeled, lighter variants of the four-horse chariot, they were more agile and faster than the heavy battlewagons. They served the city-states of Sumer-including Uruk, Ur, Lagash, and Kish-as well as Syrian cities like Mari and Ebla, as command or reconnaissance vehicles. Pulled by four equids (donkeys or donkey-onager hybrids), these models embody a fascinating era of early organized warfare.

On the tabletop

This platform cart with four equids serves as the command or scout vehicle of your Early Bronze Age army from Sumer or Syria in Hail Caesar, for example from Ur, Lagash, Kish, Mari or Ebla. Of the two crew figures supplied only one rides: either a javelinman or a commander as general. Historically the cart ran ahead of the dense spear formations, carried orders and covered the flanks. A base is not included.
