Background & context

Rüstung war in den Dark Ages teuer und blieb dem Adel und seiner Gefolgschaft vorbehalten. Die Masse eines Heeres zog in Wolle und Leder ins Feld, mit Speer, Rundschild und dem, was sonst greifbar war. Ob gotischer Verband, byzantinisches Hilfskontingent, angelsächsischer Fyrd oder Wikingertrupp: Vom Aussehen her unterschieden sich diese Männer kaum voneinander, der Unterschied lag bei Schildbemalung und Anführer.

On the tabletop

These 40 unarmoured warriors provide the bulk of almost any European army between late antiquity and the early Middle Ages in Hail Caesar. With spears they stand in the shield wall, and you can build up to 32 as slingers and up to 16 with javelins to hit the enemy before close combat. Sword and axe arms and horn blowers complete the units. Depending on how you paint the shields they become Goths, Byzantine auxiliaries, warriors of Alfred the Great or followers of a Viking leader.
