Background & context

Die Normannen waren Nachfahren skandinavischer Siedler, die sich im 10. Jahrhundert in der Normandie festsetzten und dort die fränkische Reiterkriegführung übernahmen. Mit Kettenhemd, Mandelschild und Lanze ritten ihre Ritter 1066 bei Hastings an, eroberten in derselben Generation Süditalien und Sizilien und zogen später auf den Ersten Kreuzzug. Kaum eine Kriegerelite dieser Zeit kam so weit herum.

On the tabletop

Fifteen mounted Norman knights and a fallen rider form the heavy cavalry of an 11th century army in Hail Caesar. With mail shirt, kite shield and lance they charge in close order, ideally against a flank or against foot troops that have already taken losses. The fallen rider serves as a casualty marker next to a unit. Hastings in 1066, the conquest of southern Italy and Sicily and the First Crusade are fitting settings.
