Product details

Background & context

From the 1920s cast concrete slabs became the standard surface wherever cobblestones were too expensive and asphalt too soft: in factory yards, on barracks grounds, railway loading roads and the hardstandings of airfields. In the Second World War tanks and aircraft stood on exactly such surfaces, and in the post-war period they shaped prefabricated housing estates, border crossings and petrol stations. Joints, edges and settlement cracks bring the surface to life on the table, from the garage yard to the checkpoint scene.

On the tabletop

The three plastic sheets with a concrete slab surface each measure 180 x 120 mm and form the ground for a diorama. Cut them to shape, butt them together and glue them into a barracks yard, a factory entrance or an airfield hardstand for a vehicle or aircraft model. When painting, pick out the joints in a darker tone and lighten the surfaces slightly so the individual slabs stand apart.
