Background & context

Kastilien war ab dem 11. Jahrhundert die treibende Kraft der Reconquista; mit Toledo 1085 und dem Sieg bei Las Navas de Tolosa 1212 verschob sich die Grenze dauerhaft nach Süden. Die Heere lebten von Stadtmilizen, Ritterorden und Adel. Gerüstetes Fußvolk stellten vor allem die privilegierten Grenzstädte, die dafür Steuerfreiheiten erhielten. Diese Männer kämpften in Kettenhemd oder gepolstertem Rock und hielten die Aufstellung, während die Reiterei die Entscheidung suchte.

On the tabletop

In Hail Caesar these heavily armoured Castilian foot soldiers are heavy infantry that hold the line and absorb cavalry charges. Place the eight metal figures where the enemy wants to charge with horsemen, while your own cavalry seeks the decision. Their armour can take a lot, but you need other troops to protect the flanks of the unit. Historically they belong to the Reconquista of the Christian kingdoms of Spain, from the 11th century to Las Navas de Tolosa in 1212.
