    Background & context

    Das karolingische Aufgebot war keine Berufsarmee. Wer Land besaß, hatte bewaffnet zu erscheinen, und wer wenig besaß, kam mit Speer, Schild und einem Messer am Gürtel - mehr war nicht drin. Genau diese Männer stellten die Masse der Heere, mit denen Karl der Große fast jedes Jahr gegen Sachsen, Langobarden und Awaren zog. Als später die Nordmänner an Seine und Loire auftauchten, mussten dieselben Aufgebote als Erste ausrücken.

    On the tabletop

    These 36 unarmoured Franks are the bulk of the Carolingian levy. They gather around their lord or stand in dense groups in the shield wall, and that is how you place them beside or behind the armoured warriors. Cross-guarded spears, axes, seaxes and wooden clubs show men who brought whatever they owned. Bare heads, caps and helmets set the warriors apart, and they mix with Victrix Saxons, Vikings or Normans.
