    Die Kapitularien Karls des Großen schrieben genau vor, wer mit Brünne, Helm, Schild und Speer anzutreten hatte: der, dessen Landbesitz eine bestimmte Größe überschritt. Panzerung war teuer, entsprechend selten und entsprechend entscheidend, sobald zwei Linien aufeinandertrafen. Fränkische Schwerter und Panzerhemden galten im Norden als so begehrt, dass ihre Ausfuhr an die Nordmänner mehrfach verboten wurde. Gegen Sachsen, Awaren und später die Wikingerscharen stand dieser Kern ganz vorn.

    On the tabletop

    The 36 armoured Franks represent the elite of a Carolingian army or dismounted horsemen. In a tight shield wall they stand in the front rank, where an enemy breakthrough would hurt most. Mail, scale and lamellar armour, cross-guarded spears, swords and hand axes make every figure different, and horn blowers and standard bearers lead your block. They fit the eighth to eleventh centuries, against Saxons, Avars or Vikings.
