Background & context

Caesars Legionen der fünfziger Jahre vor Christus waren keine Bürgeraufgebote mehr, sondern Berufssoldaten, die ihrem Feldherrn folgten und von ihm Land erwarteten. Ihre Ausrüstung war einheitlicher als früher: Kettenhemd, großes Scutum, zwei Pila und der kurze Gladius. Das Gefechtsmuster war simpel und brutal, erst die Pila werfen, dann in die entstandene Lücke laufen und auf kurze Distanz stechen. In Gallien kämpften diese Legionen acht Jahre lang, danach im Bürgerkrieg gegen Truppen, die genauso ausgebildet waren wie sie selbst.

On the tabletop

Beim Aufstellen denkst du in Kohorten: Die 96 Legionäre teilst du in mehrere gleich große Einheiten und verteilst die Kommandofiguren darauf. Stellst du sie in zwei Linien gestaffelt auf, rückt die hintere nach, sobald vorn eine Einheit wankt. Die 2 Offiziere aus Metall führen als General und als Unterführer eines Flügels. Der Scorpion ist die einzige Fernwaffe der Division und braucht einen Platz, von dem aus er den Gegner schon beim Anmarsch trifft. Reiterei liegt nicht bei, die Flanken hältst du deshalb mit Gelände oder mit der zweiten Linie.
