    Product details

    Background & context

The onager - named after the wild ass, which defends itself with kicks - was the heavy throwing machine of the Roman legions and was primarily used during sieges of forts and settlements. Loaded with large stones or burning projectiles, it could shake walls and hurl fire into enemy camps. In Caesar's campaigns in Gaul and during the civil war against Pompey, such war machines represented a decisive advantage in the siege of fortified places. The Caesarian legions of the late 1st century BC were considered the most powerful armed force of their time - and their artillery was an essential part of this superiority.

    On the tabletop

The onager hurls heavy stones over ramparts and palisades, sometimes coated in a flammable substance and set alight. In Hail Caesar it belongs, with its crew of three, to an army of Caesar's legions and is above all suited to siege scenarios. Place it well back and bombard fortified positions or densely packed units. Avaricum and Alesia in the Gallic War and the civil war against Pompey provide the setting.
