Background & context

Rom hatte seine eigene Bürgerreiterei längst abgeschafft - im 1. Jahrhundert v. Chr. saßen die Verbündeten im Sattel: gallische und germanische Kontingente bei Caesar, thrakische, griechische und kleinasiatische Reiter bei Pompeius. Zahlenmäßig blieb die Kavallerie eine Randgröße, taktisch war sie das nicht. Bei Pharsalos 48 v. Chr. entschied sich der Bürgerkrieg genau an diesem Flügel, weil Caesar seine dünne Reiterlinie mit ausgesuchten Kohorten unterfütterte.

On the tabletop

Gauls and Germans made up most of Caesar's cavalry, while Pompey recruited his horsemen in Greece, Thrace, Anatolia and Syria. These ten metal riders give you a unit in Hail Caesar for either side of the civil war or for Caesar's campaigns in Gaul. They throw their light javelins before a charge and rely on spear and oval shield in the melee. Use them to secure the wings of your legion, and Pharsalus shows how much can depend on that wing.
