Product details

Background & context

The ballista was the most important long-range weapon of the Caesarian legions. As a torsion-powered throwing machine, it fired bolts or stone balls with high precision and enormous penetrating power. Even in the early Republic, sources report that individual soldiers were specifically eliminated from a great distance. In the Gallic War and the Roman Civil War, these machines represented a decisive tactical advantage. On the march, they were accompanied by specialized operating crews and positioned on the battlefield.

On the tabletop

Caesar's legions brought their artillery with them, and this ballista with a crew of three in metal represents such an engine in Hail Caesar. The torsion engine shoots bolts or stone shot further than any archer can reach, and it is very accurate. Placed behind your cohorts, it engages the enemy while he is still approaching. Caesar had ballistae shoot from ships at the Britons and set them up on the ramparts at Alesia, so it suits siege scenarios as well.
