Product details

Background & context

After the devastating defeat against Napoleon in 1806, the Treaty of Tilsit forced Prussia to reduce its regular armed forces to a minimum. As the decisive phase of the Napoleonic Wars began, Prussia therefore primarily relied on Landwehr units - volunteer militias from the general population, which formed the core of the mobilized army. The equipment and training of these units often left much to be desired, but the men compensated for this deficiency with their fighting motivation and sheer troop strength. Well-trained Jäger units operated in front of the Landwehr regiments, taking on reconnaissance and security tasks as light infantry.

On the tabletop

With 240 Landwehr men in three regiments, a regiment of Landwehr cavalry and skirmishing Jäger you can field a Prussian Landwehr brigade of the 1815 campaign in Epic Battles. Less well equipped and trained than the line, the Landwehr makes up for it with numbers and determination. The Jäger move ahead, protect the regiments and harass the enemy. Together with line infantry they recreate Blücher's army, almost half of which was Landwehr.
