Background & context

What stood on the slope of Mont-Saint-Jean on 18 June 1815 was only partly British. Wellington led a mixture of British troops, the King's German Legion, Hanoverians, Dutch and Brunswickers, which he himself judged in less than flattering terms. His remedy was the ground: the line lay behind the crest, out of sight of the French guns, and stood up only when the columns reached the top. Against the cavalry attacks of the afternoon the infantry formed squares and held them until the Prussians arrived.

On the tabletop

You spread ten units of line infantry across several brigades and decide for yourself which of the nine brigade commanders leads how many of them. The three units of 95th Rifles go ahead of the line as a skirmish screen or occupy buildings. You group Heavy Dragoons, Scots Greys and Household Cavalry into the heavy cavalry brigade; Hussars and Light Dragoons form the light one, which secures the flanks and pursues. You place the 16 guns as batteries between the brigades. The MDF inn La Belle Alliance is your first piece of terrain, and thanks to the A5 rulebook all that is missing for your first game is an opponent.
