Background & context

The British light cavalry was among the most mobile and aggressive formations of the Coalition forces during the Napoleonic Wars. Hussars and light dragoons fulfilled different roles: while the hussars were known for their aggressive engagement and striking uniform, the light dragoons were considered a more sober, but equally battle-hardened cavalry unit. The Royal Horse Artillery accompanied these swift units with mobile fire support and was designed to keep pace with the cavalry. Together, these formations constituted a flexible tactical instrument on the battlefields of the Napoleonic era.

On the tabletop

Three light regiments and a horse battery come in this box: three bases each of hussars in shako and in busby, five bases of light dragoons and three Royal Horse Artillery 9-pounders. In 13.5 mm Black Powder games they cover a flank, scout and pursue a beaten enemy. British light horsemen did not shy away from fighting enemy cavalry either. At Waterloo the brigades of Vandeleur and Vivian secured the left flank.
