Product details

Background & context

The Continental Army emerged as the regular armed force of the rebellious American colonies and formed the military backbone of the resistance against British colonial rule. In addition to trained line regiments, the Patriots relied heavily on militias from individual colonies and specialized rifle units operating with rifled muskets. Cavalry performed reconnaissance and flank protection duties, while artillery was often only available in limited quantities. The heterogeneous composition of regular units, volunteers, and militiamen shaped both the strengths and weaknesses of this army.

On the tabletop

Most of the box is militia: 120 militiamen make 2 small regiments, a further 80 a standard regiment. You place the 60 Regulars as a small regiment at the point that has to hold even when the militia gives way. Ahead of the line the 15 Riflemen work as skirmishers, and the 8 cavalrymen are enough for 2 small horse regiments that cover the flanks or drive off enemy skirmishers. You put the gun alongside the Regulars. With 4 mounted commanders you split the troops into several brigades, for instance the militia under its own command and the Regulars, Riflemen and horse under a second.
