Background & context

The American War of Independence presented both sides with enormous leadership challenges: On the British side, experienced professional officers, supported by Hessian mercenary units, were active, while the Continental Army relied on a heterogeneous mix of professional military personnel and commanders deeply rooted in the local population. The quality of troop leadership often proved decisive in this conflict - tactical skill had to compensate for a lack of material superiority or discipline. Especially on the American side, officers who originated from the country itself shaped the character of the resistance against the colonial power. The personalities pictured here are exemplary of the entire spectrum of military leadership in this epochal conflict.

On the tabletop

For the American War of Independence in Epic Battles and Black Powder you get four commanders of the Crown, Cornwallis, Tarleton, Howe and Riedesel, and two of the Continental Army, Gates and Morgan. Each can lead a brigade or your whole army, either as the historical figure or as a generic general. Fitting scenarios include Saratoga, Cowpens with Morgan's trap of militia and riflemen, or Yorktown in 1781. The figures are cast in Warlord Resin.
