    In the late 18th century, the British Army was among the most professional forces in the Western world - trained in European linear tactics and deployed globally. In North America, its colonial troops faced a new kind of adversary: insurgent militias and Continental units that used knowledge of the terrain and guerrilla tactics to compensate for their lesser discipline. The interplay of regular line regiments, flexible light infantry, and local militia units reflected the tactical breadth with which the Crown sought to assert its dominion over the American continent. Artillery support played a crucial role in both pitched battles and siege operations.
