Background & context

In the late 18th century, the British Army was among the most professional forces in the Western world - trained in European linear tactics and deployed globally. In North America, its colonial troops faced a new kind of adversary: insurgent militias and Continental units that used knowledge of the terrain and guerrilla tactics to compensate for their lesser discipline. The interplay of regular line regiments, flexible light infantry, and local militia units reflected the tactical breadth with which the Crown sought to assert its dominion over the American continent. Artillery support played a crucial role in both pitched battles and siege operations.

On the tabletop

You split the redcoats into two line regiments: 80 men form the standard regiment, 60 men a small one alongside it. The 60 militiamen come in as a third regiment, which you are more likely to place at a hedge or in the second line than in the volley line. The 10 light infantrymen fan out ahead of the front as skirmishers, and the gun goes into a gap in the line. One of the two mounted commanders leads the brigade, the other stays on as general or for a second brigade as the army grows. The flag sheet covers British and Continental formations, so you already have the flags for both sides.
