Product details

Background & context

Napoleon's Imperial Guard was considered the elite unit par excellence - a self-contained fighting force with its own statutes, better provisions, and a strong esprit de corps. Only soldiers who had distinguished themselves through long service and proven bravery were admitted to its ranks. The Old Guard, recognizable by their distinctive bearskin hats with brass plates, enjoyed the emperor's absolute trust and was deployed at decisive moments. The Middle Guard was similarly composed but had simpler equipment and formed the backbone of the Guard infantry in numerous campaigns. These units were supplemented by specialized units such as the Guard Marines and Guard Sappers, which gave the army additional tactical versatility.

On the tabletop

Napoleon's Imperial Guard was an army within an army, and this box brings three Guard battalions of 80 men each with mounted commanders to Black Powder Epic Battles. You tell the Old Guard by the brass plate on the bearskin, which the Middle Guard lacks, and extra heads with shako or bonnet show its poorer supply. Marines and Engineers of the Guard, 30 men each, complete the force. Three 12-pounders cover the attack with long-range fire.
