    Hintergrund & Einordnung

    The Zouave regiments of the American Civil War stood out from the majority of Union infantry due to their colorful uniforms, modeled on North African precedents, and were considered particularly battle-hardened light infantry units. Several of these units gained national renown during the war and were valued for their fighting spirit. The cavalry of the Union Army primarily undertook reconnaissance and security duties during the Civil War - the classic cavalry charge of past eras receded into the background in favor of flexible, mounted infantry tactics. Skirmish lines on both sides formed an indispensable tactical element, securing main forces and putting pressure on enemy flanks.
