    The Iron Brigade was among the most renowned combat units of the Union in the American Civil War. Its recruits hailed from the states of Wisconsin, Michigan, and Indiana - men who became known for their steadfastness and fighting spirit. Their distinctive identifying feature was the black Hardee hat, which visually set the unit apart from other Union forces.
