    Hintergrund & Einordnung

    The American Civil War is one of the most momentous armed conflicts of the 19th century and presented a severe test for the young nation. In the summer of 1863, the main armies of both sides clashed in Pennsylvania in a multi-day engagement that went down in history as the bloodiest encounter of the entire war. The Confederate advance into the North failed due to the determination of the Union defenders, and the subsequent retreat marked a strategic turning point from which the Southern army never fully recovered. This moment is still considered a crossroads in the struggle for the future of the United States.
