Background & context

Bondi hieß schlicht der freie Mann mit eigenem Hof, kein Söldner und kein Gefolgsmann, sondern einer, der auf dem Thing mitredete und im Aufgebot mitzog, wenn der Jarl rief. Ausgerüstet hat er sich selbst, und genau daran erkennt man ihn: Speer und Schild waren zu bezahlen, ein Helm oder gar ein Kettenhemd meistens nicht. Die Bondi stellten den Großteil jedes Wikingerheeres, die Huscarls im Sold eines Herrn blieben die Minderheit.

On the tabletop

Bondi were the free farmers with their own land who marched when the jarl called out his levy. In Hail Caesar the eight bareheaded figures provide the bulk of a Viking army and stand in the shield wall. You use them to fill the large units, while the better equipped huscarls of a lord form the smaller elite. Mixed with the helmeted bondi of the same range, the ranks look less uniform, as befits men who had to equip themselves.
