Background & context

Die Torsionsgeschütze gehen auf die Waffenwerkstätten von Syrakus zurück, wo man herausfand, dass verdrillte Sehnenbündel weit mehr Energie speichern als ein gespannter Bogen. Philipp II. und Alexander machten daraus eine stehende Einrichtung: Belagerungsparks, die mit dem Heer zogen. Antike Autoren berichten immer wieder von Ballisten-Schützen, die einzelne Männer von der Mauer holten - eine Zielgenauigkeit, die man einer Kriegsmaschine kaum zutraut.

On the tabletop

For Macedonian and Greek armies in Hail Caesar, this set provides a ballista with its Hellenistic crew in metal. It shoots bolts or stone shot and was so accurate that crews could pick off individual enemies. On the table you place it behind the phalanx and engage approaching units at range. From Philip of Macedon and Alexander the Great onwards such engines travelled with the army, and the Successors used them too, for example at the siege of Rhodes.
