Background & context

Das neuassyrische Reich leistete sich als eine der ersten Mächte ein stehendes Heer. Der Kisir Sharruti, die königliche Truppe, wurde ausgehoben, ausgerüstet und ganzjährig unterhalten, dazu kamen Kontingente unterworfener Völker. Auf den Reliefs aus Nimrud und Ninive marschieren diese Speerträger in dichten Reihen hinter mannshohen Schilden, dahinter die Bogenschützen. Diese Kombination trug das Reich über zwei Jahrhunderte.

On the tabletop

These eight spearmen belong to the Kisir Sharruti, the standing royal force of the Neo-Assyrian empire. In Hail Caesar they form a closed block of spears with archers set up behind them, just as the reliefs from Nimrud and Nineveh show. This combination of spear and bow carried the empire for two centuries. Contingents from subject peoples let you expand them into a larger Assyrian army.
