Product details

Background & context

The word Ashigaru simply means light foot and at first referred to peasants who were levied for a campaign and sent home afterwards. In the civil wars of the 16th century they became standing contingents in clan colours, equipped with long yari and uniform armour. Those who rose could go far: Toyotomi Hideyoshi began as a common foot soldier and ended as lord of all Japan.

On the tabletop

As the foot soldiers of a Japanese army from the age of civil wars, these 24 ashigaru form the broad mass of your battle line in 28 mm scale. With long yari you deploy them as a dense spear line that fends off charging samurai and holds its ground. Built with naginata, they go into close combat instead, and you choose the weapon during assembly. Your samurai launch their attacks from behind this line.
